Homosexual couples who want to have a child through a surrogate mother can do so at Dutch clinics from next year, according to a survey by television program De Monitor. Until now that has been impossible in the Netherlands due to strict regulations, newspaper AD reports.

At least two Dutch clinics will start offering surrogacy to gay couples next year - MC Kinderwens in Leiderdorp and Nij Geertgen clinic in Elsendorp. In Leiderdorp the surrogate mother must also donate the egg. In Elsendorp the surrogate and egg donor may be different people.

The procurement process for a machine used to treat brainstem cancer in children has been started. Six year old Tijn, who died of this cancer last year, raised more than a million euros to help pay for this device.

The VUmc in Amsterdam halted patient intake in its intensive care and medium care departments for 48 hours, due to an outbreak of antibiotic resistant bacteria Acinetobacter baumannii. Patients currently hospitalized in these departments can also not leave the hospital, RTL Nieuws reports.

The hospital has been struggling with this bacteria for over two weeks. "Despite strict isolation measures, intensive cleaning and extra hygiene measures in recent weeks, more infections were unfortunately found this week", the hospital said in a statement.

Next year the city of Amsterdam will inaugurate a large, internationally-focused virtual reality training center for surgeons and other medical specialists. The Amsterdam Skills Centre for Health Sciences, or ASC, is a partnership between the city's two teaching hospitals to provide VR training for thousands of medical specialist trainees.

Some three thousand AMC and VUmc students will be able to hone their skills on virtual patients in twelve simulated operating rooms.

The Dutch hospitals that can offer NIP tests to all pregnant women from April 1st are getting ready for a rush. They expect that half of the about 180 thousand pregnant women in the Netherlands per year will opt for the test, AD reports. Belgian company Gendia is suing the Dutch state for illegal state aid by subsidizing the test, which screens for serious disorders like Down's Syndrome.

Amsterdam hospital VUmc is getting 34.8 million euros in insurance money for damage caused by mass flooding last year this time. The flooding was caused by a break in the water main that left the hospital nonoperational for two weeks.

Damages caused by flooding at VU hospital following a water main break two weeks ago are estimated at some 50 million euros, medical center chairman Wouter Bos told reporters at the hospital's re-opening on Wednesday morning. Technical installations that were in the basement were badly damaged, some irreparably.

All patients are being evacuated from the VU Medical Center in Amsterdam-Zuid after a burst in the water main caused flooding in the area. The flooding has caused a number of problems for the hospital. The expectation is that the hospital will be closed at least a week.

Throat cancer is currently more often caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The number of throat cancer cases cause by HPV in the Netherlands has gone up sixfold in the last 20 years. Despite that dramatic increase, it does seem that this form of throat cancer is generally more easily treatable than other forms, the Volkskrant reports.

Since December, around 250 transgender people considering undergoing gender reassignment surgery have gone to the VU medical center in Amsterdam for treatment. This comes from a letter to Minister Edith Schippers of Public Health by the Netherlands Care Authority (NZa) on Thursday.
