Next week the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament, will vote on amendments to the prostitution that will increase the minimum age for a prostitute to 21 years.
Customers of underage prostitutes rarely ended up in court over the past 15 years. And those that did got lower sentences than the guidelines.
The police arrested seven men between the ages of 25 and 50 years old on Tuesday and Wednesday on suspicion of having sex with underage prostitutes. The suspects come from Noord Holland and Flevoland.
At least 76 women and underage girls with mental disabilities were recruited for prostitution in the Netherlands over the past two years while residents of institutions for people with lower intellectual capabilities. A new investigation into the growing trend will be broadcast in the Dutch-language program, “Dit is de Dag Onderzoek,” Saturday at 9:15 pm on NPO 2.
Prostitutes under the age of 21 years will not be prosecuted. With this measure Minister Ard van der Steur of Security and Justice hopes that young prostitutes will be more willing to turn to the police to report sexual exploitation.
