Sixteen-year-old girls who use oral contraceptive are more likely to have depressive feelings than their peers who are not on the pill. They report more crying, excessive sleeping and eating problems, according to a joint study by the University Medical Center Groningen, Leiden University Medical Center and the American Brigham and Women's Hospital.

An elevator with 14 people inside fell six floors in the faculty building of the University Medical Center in Groningen on Thursday. One person was taken to the emergency room with unknown injuries, NU.nl reports.

Both staff members and UMCG students were in the elevator when it fell, the Medical Center and University of Groningen confirmed. The elevator got stuck on the sixth floor. It fell during work to solve this problem.

The other elevators in the building on Anthonius Deusinglaan have been shut down while the cause of this accident is investigated.

Surgeons at the University Medical Center in Groningen (UMCG) recently successfully performed the first surgeries with the help of the hospital's new surgical robot. The operations were successful and the patients are doing well, the hospital said in a statement on its website.

Inés "was sick and could not be cured", Queen Maxima said about her youngest sister's death. "Our only comfort is that she has now found peace", the Dutch Queen said after paying a visit to the UMCG Proton Therapy Center in Groningen on Tuesday, ANP reports.

Inés Zorreguieta suffered from depression. She committed suicide on June 6th at the age of 33.

The Dutch Network for Addiction Care, an umbrella organization for various organizations dealing with addiction, is joining a major lawsuit against the tobacco industry. "The cigarette is a criminal product and all 'dealers' must be dealt with. This product is so harmful. It's unbelievable that it is just in the supermarket", spokesperson Robert van de Graaf of the network said to AD.

New Year's celebrations with fireworks in the Netherlands generally go hand-in-hand with dozens of firework related injuries, and this year was no exception. The Eye Hospital in Rotterdam already admitted eight people with a total of 10 injured eyes. And dozens of people were admitted to hospital with burns and other firework related injuries.

Drones will be used to transport medicine from the Dutch mainland to the Wadden island of Schiermonnikoog in a new experiment by UMCG Ambulance Care and ANWB Medical Air Assistance, NU.nl reports.

The test involves three drones making a total of 30 flights from an unspecified location in Friesland to the helicopter port on the island. The municipality of Schiermonnikoog agreed to the test, under the condition that this will only involve medical flights. The island wants to deter commercial flights, because they disturb the peace.

The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) is launching an internal investigation following the death of one of its psychiatric patients in an explosion in Veendam on Wednesday morning. The 37-year-old man died when his apartment exploded. And while the cause of the explosion is yet to be confirmed, many believe the man caused it himself.

The scientists are trying to determine how the visual cortex responds to different vision and brain disorders, and to find out how the brain responds to developing information it receives from the eyes.

A mother and her 18-month-old baby were rescued from their submerged car, after it landed in the Lutterhoofdwijk canal in De Krim, Overijssel on Monday morning. The mother and child have been taken to hospital, but their condition was alarming, a spokesperson for the IJsseland safety region told RTV Drenthe.
