A crew member of TUIfly was arrested at Schiphol Airport on Saturday on suspicion of drug trafficking from Curacao. The Koninklijke Marechaussee confirmed that someone was arrested, but would give no further details, the Telegraaf reports.

The Koninklijke Marechaussee is a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for border control and airport security. "The investigation is ongoing", is all that a spokesperson would say to the Telegraaf.

The longest delayed flight of 2016 was a TUIfly flight from Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic to Schiphol. The flight was delayd for 43 hours and 19 minutes, EUClaim - a company that assists aggrieved passangers - announced on Thursday, ANP reports.

The delay started with a technical fault on the original aircraft. The replacement plane from HiFly then crashed into a passenger bridge, which means that another replacement plane had to be sent. This took so long that the flight crew needed to be given time to rest before the flight could begin.

Airlines KLM, Corendon and TUIfly are expected to call on their passengers to arrive at Schiphol airport as much as four hours before their flight, instead of the standard two or three hours, because of staff shortages in the Marechaussee, the military policing force responsible for security at the airport. Long queues and delays are expected at the entrance to the secured areas of the airport, and at the passport controls for those leaving the Schengen Area.
