Dutch rail company NS is looking into building thousands of homes above the railways around Utrecht Central Station, Amsterdam Sloterdijk, and The Hague Central Station. NS wants to use the money it expects to earn with this to modernize the train stations, RTL Nieuws reports.
A baby was saved from the train tracks at the Anna Paulowna station in Noord-Holland after it somehow fell between a platform and a train. The train conductor managed to collect the baby from the narrow space while an engineer flagged down two police officers on duty in a squad car at the station, police said on Instagram.
“Immediately [we] jumped out of the car and went there,” one officer said. By the time the police arrived at the platform, the young child had been saved. Paramedics were also dispatched to the scene around 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday.
The number of unauthorized people walking along Dutch train tracks increased by 200 to a total of 3,105 last year, according to rail manager ProRail. These incidents delayed 16,539 trains and meant that 1.6 million passengers reached their destinations late, ANP reports.
According to the ProRail, these so-called "rail walkers" are often hikers, people walking their dogs, children playing or vandals. "They appear especially when the weather is nice and in places where recreation and tracks meet. Think of nature areas or campsites located next to the track." ProRail said.
ProRail is concerned about the increasing number of kids seen playing on train tracks. Train drivers have reported 168 incidents of kids playing on or near train tracks so far this year, compared to the usual 150 to 200 reports a year.
Train traffic to Schiphol has come to a near stand still after copper thieves wreaked havoc on the track between the airport and stations at Amsterdam Zuid and Amsterdam Lelylaan. ProRail announced they may need all day to fix the damage, and the train schedule in the busy network is in chaos.
At Utrecht Centraal, trains are riding on a normal schedule again after nine days of rail repair work by ProRail. The maintenance work was finished on time, and all trains are riding by the book Monday morning, NU.nl reports.
A 25-year-old man from Dordrecht survived a collision with a train in Tricht on Thursday night. The police say that the man is in hospital for injuries to his arms and legs, the Algemeen Dagblad reports.
A tuck has ended up on the train tracks on the southern side of Amsterdam after an accident between the Badhoevedorp and Slote junctions on the A4 just before 7 a.m. Nobody was hurt. There are some delays with traffic for this morning.
State Secretary Wilma Mansveld of Infrastructure and Environment has announced that €1.1 billion will be made available for improve train transport. After discussions with regional governors, it has been decided that certain aspects of train travel have to be made to a higher standard.
