Jorrit Nuijens, GroenLinks alderman in Diemen, was arrested in front of the Amsterdam city hall on Thursday evening for disrupting public order. The 39-year-old alderman "went completely crazy" at cafe Amstelhoeck, located next to the Amsterdam city hall, a waiter at the cafe told the Telegraaf.

A total of 3.3 million new jobs were created in the Netherlands between 2014 and 2017, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Wednesday. In Amsterdam, youth unemployment nearly halved over the past our years. Last year 6.2 percent of young people between the ages of 15 to 26 years in Amsterdam were unemployed, compared to 13.3 percent in 2014, the city said in a press statement.

With just a week to go until the municipal elections, both the D66 and GroenLinks have a solid chance to become the biggest party in Amsterdam. Both parties currently stand at 17 percent of Amsterdam votes - good for 9 seats in the city council, according to a poll by Maurice de Hond of Peil.nl, Het Parool reports.

Nine seats is an increase of three seats for GroenLinks, and a loss of 5 seats for the D66.The party that comes out the biggest after the municipal election on March 21st can take the lead in forming a new coalition.

After the municipal elections, GroenLinks wants the new Amsterdam city council to block expansion plans for Lelystad Airport, party leader Jesse Klaver and Amsterdam faction leader Rutger Groot Wassink said, NOS reports.

Lelystad Airport is owned by Schiphol. And Amsterdam has a 20 percent share in Schiphol. The green party wants Amsterdam to be an "activist" shareholder and stop expansion plans for Lelystad Airport.

GroenLinks wants to give artists from outside the European Union a special visa so that they will settle in Amsterdam. According to the party, many artists now go to settle in cities like Brussels or Berlin, which have special visas giving artists residency in the city, while the should feel at home in an international city like Amsterdam

For the first time since 1946, Amsterdam may have to move forward with a city council without the PvdA. Almost a week after a minority agreement of D66 and GroenLinks it seems like all signs are pointing to the VVD, not the PvdA, becoming the third partner in the city council. The parties will publicize their choice for partner before the weekend.
