On Wednesday the Public Prosecutor demanded prison sentences up to nine years against the nine men suspected of involvement in a failed attempt to hijack a helicopter and break gang leader Benaouf A. out of the prison in Roermond. Some of the suspects are also facing charges of weapons possession and possession of stolen cars, NU.nl reports.
Benaouf A. was transferred to the high security prison in Vught after a group of Amsterdam criminals tried to hijack a helicopter to break him out of the prison in Roermond on Wednesday. Vught is the highest security prison in the Netherlands, RTL Nieuws reports.
The police managed to stop the helicopter plan, after the Amsterdam police got wind of the plans during an ongoing investigation. Three suspects were arrested, one was shot and killed and several others got away.
On Wednesday night the police prevented a helicopter hijacking in Limburg. According to a statement released by the police, criminals from the Amsterdam underworld wanted to use this helicopter to break a convict out of the penitentiary in Roermond. During the police intervention in Roosteren, one suspect was shot by a member of a SWAT team. He died of his injuries. Three others were arrested.
