In the coming years, the construction backlog on the number of homes in the Netherlands will be partially made up, according to a forecast by Statistics Netherlands and the Netherlands environmental assessment agency PBL. But it will likely not be enough to eliminate the existing housing shortage completely, the Telegraaf reports.

A decade after the biggest economic crisis since the 1930s hit the Netherlands, most Dutch have recovered and are satisfied with their lives. But that does not apply to a group of around 400 thousand people who are still struggling, social and cultural planning office SCP said in its report The social state of the Netherlands. The SCP looked at the state of the Netherlands in the period 2008 to 2018, NOS reports.

The Dutch population grew by 46 thousand people in the first half of this year, mainly due to immigration, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday. The number of British people moving to the Netherlands more than doubled compared to the same period last year. This likely has to do with the United Kingdom's imminent departure from the European Union.

In the first half of this year the Netherlands population grew by 32 thousand people, compared to 35 thousand in the first half of last year. This slower growth can be attributed to the flu epidemic in the country in the first months of 2018, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday. The Netherlands currently has 17.2 million inhabitants.

Women in the Netherlands are more likely to give birth during the week than on the weekend, according to Statistics Netherlands' analysis of the birth and mortality patterns in the country last year. The stats office partly attributes this to the fact that more women give birth in hospitals - less than a quarter of last year's births happened at home.

Remarkably, there are also fewer deaths in the Netherlands over the weekends than on weekdays. In 2016 only 7 percent of the deaths happened on a Sunday and there is a peak of deaths on Fridays. It is not clear why.

The total population of the Netherlands increased by 35 thousand people in the first half of this year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Monday. Like last year, immigration is still the driving force behind the population growth in the Netherlands.

During the first six months of this year about 100 thousand immigrants settled in the Netherlands, about the same as in the same period in 2016. A total of 69 thousand people emigrated away from the Netherlands. The migration balance is therefore 31 thousand, approximately the same as a year ago.
