A total of 2,964 people died during the July week in which a record breaking heatwave hit the Netherlands. That is almost 400 more deaths than in an average summer week, Statistics Netherlands reported based on preliminary figures.

Fewer people died in this milder than usual winter, according to Statistics Netherlands. Between the first week of December 2015 and the second week of February 2016, a total of 32.5 thousand people died in the Netherlands. That is 2.5 thousand fewer deaths than in the same period 2015/2015.
