The new Dutch Minister for Foreign Affairs Halbe Zijlstra undertook an introductory visit in the Israeli and Palestinian territories last Wednesday and Thursday. During his visit he met with the tormented Palestinians of the West Bank. Now that the peace process with Israel is sent to an halt, Palestinians ask for help to the Netherlands.

A drug lab for producing Captagon pills was discovered in a raid in Brunssum, Limburg. Captagon contains amphetamine and caffeine and is a popular drug among combatant groups in the Middle East, where it is used as an 'upper' to keep fighters awake and alert, according to the Telegraaf.

Minister Bert Koenders of Foreign Affairs will be visiting the United Nations in New York on Monday and Tuesday. During his visit he will give a speech about Syria and the fight against ISIS. He will also speak about the Netherlands' ambition to become a temporary member of the UN Security council from 2017 to 2018, the elections for membership are in June.

Dutch labour union CNV is concerned that layoff plans announced this week at Air France could indicate dark clouds on the horizon at sister airline KLM. The French airline wants to eliminate 2,900 jobs and end some long-haul flights to Asia, which sent unruly employees to the company's headquarters in a flash protest that including ripping the clothes off two executives.

The first case of MERS in the Netherlands was reported today in a joint statement issued by the Erasmus MC and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). The patient is said to have been “infected during a visit to Saudi Arabia,” according to the statement. Local reports in the Netherlands say the patient had visited Mecca and Medina.
