At least 574 people were treated for fireworks-related injuries in the Netherlands on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, according to safety firm VeiligheidNL. The organization says it is a sharp drop from last year's celebrations, when an additional 126 were hurt.

Doctors in the Netherlands assisted 4,829 people to commit suicide in 2013, representing a 15% percent increase over 2012. The vast majority of cases involved patients suffering with cancer or unbearable pain, according to a report published by the five regional review committees.

The Dutch co-pilot of a Thai Lion Air flight passed out 20 minutes after take-off, and died soon after. Peter Esberte was 47 years old when collapsed during the flight from Hat Yai, Thailand to Bangkok, the Bangkok Post reported.
