Amsterdam is tackling the teacher shortage in the city with extra parking permits, a larger travel allowance, money for teachers coming from other professions, scholarships to improve teams in schools, and 10 thousand euros per director for support, education alderman Marjolein Moorman announced on Monday, Het Parool reports.
In the coming school year, Amsterdam will tackle the teacher shortage in primary and secondary education with a team of over 60 municipal officials, four of whom have a teaching qualification. The team will support schools with administration or a class assistant. The four qualified officials will teach where necessary, the Volkskrant reports.
The new Amsterdam city government of GroenLinks, D66, PvdA and SP presented its coalition agreement on Thursday. "The coalition agreement is ambitious and will change things in the city", GroenLinks leader Rutger Groot Wassink said, according to Het Parool. "I always said: the city must become more sustainable, more honest and more democratic, and this agreement does that."

Sharon Dijksma is one of the new proposed aldermen for the PvdA in Amsterdam, the party announced. Should the coalition negotiations end successfully, she will handle the portfolio for traffic and transport, water and air quality, ANP reports.
Dijksma is currently a parliamentarian for the PvdA. In the previous government, she was first State Secretary of Economic Affairs and then State Secretary of Infrastructure and Environment.
It is unclear whether the municipality of Amsterdam will be able to implement a ban on renting entire homes to tourists through sites like Airbnb, as the Amsterdam faction of the PvdA proposed doing in its election program for the upcoming municipal elections.

The Amsterdam faction of labour party PvdA wants to ban holiday apartment rentals in the Dutch capital, including those available through sites like Airbnb. This ban applies to the rental of complete homes, but not the letting of single rooms, meaning the proposal would not affect true Bed & Breakfasts, according to the party's election program released ahead of the 2018 municipal elections, Het Parool reports.

Amsterdam is getting overcrowded with tourists and forecasts show that this will only get worse. According to the PvdA, the many tourists is a risk for the attractiveness of the city and something has to be done.
The Center for Information and Documentation Israel (CIDI) is demanding that Amsterdam finds another name for the Mijksenaarzaal in the city hall, the Stopera. This follows a report in Het Parool that former Amsterdam official Pieter Jan Mijksenaar actively cooperated in the deportation of Jews during World War II. The Amsterdam city council is demanding further research into the matter and will then see what can be done.
