Liberation Day festivals

On Sunday the Netherlands is celebrating Liberation day with various festivals and parties across the country. Prime Minister Mark Rutte will kick off the festivities by giving a speech and then lighting the Liberation Fire at 1:00 p.m. at the Liberation Festival Flevoland in Almere. The lighting of the Liberation Fire is considered the start sign for the 14 Liberation Festivals across the country.

Just before midnight the liberation fire was lit in front of Hotel De Wereld in Wageningen by mayor Geert van Rumund - officially ending Remembrance Day on May 4th and kicking off the Liberation Day celebrations. Today the Netherlands celebrates freedom and being liberated after World War II.

Despite the rainy weather, Prime Minister Mark Rutte lit the liberation fire in Vlissingen at 13:00 this afternoon, thereby giving the official go-ahead for all fourteen liberation parties in the Netherlands.
