International students bring considerably more money into the Dutch economy than they cost it, according to a study by central planning office CPB. Foreign students from non-European Union countries in particular generate a lot of money for the Dutch treasury, NU.nl reports.

International students in the Netherlands are very positive about the quality of Dutch lecturers, but they struggle to feel at home in the country, according to a survey by three student organizations. They struggle to connect with their Dutch peers, have trouble finding affordable housing, and complain about how difficult it is to find courses to teach them the Dutch language, Trouw and Het Parool report.

Housing prices in Amsterdam increased by an average of 70 percent since the low point on the housing market in 2013, compared to the national average of 30 percent.

Higher education in the Netherlands must be able to internationalize further, but only if it improves the quality of education and if Dutch students are not displaced, according to Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven of Education. She is therefore giving universities and universities of applied sciences more room to internationalize, but this will go with clearer conditions and stricter supervision, ANP reports.

Association Beter Onderwijs Nederland (BON) is filing a lawsuit against the University of Twente, Maastricht University, and the Inspectorate for Education in an effort to halt higher education in the Netherlands turning increasingly English, ANP reports.

According to BON, "the care of Dutch language and culture is a core task for higher education". The association believes that switching to teaching in English is contrary to the law. "Dutch threatens to become a kind of provincial language", BON chairman Ad Verbrugge said.

Dutch universities want to limit the increase of students from abroad, umbrella organization VSNU confirmed to NOS after reports in NRC. 

On Monday the VSNU will send an internationalization agenda to Education Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven. A spokesperson for the organization would not tell NOS what their plans entail, but did say that the agenda contains many more subjects than just the admission of new students.

A foreign student completing a Masters project at the Biomedical Technology faculty at TU Eindhoven for the last six months has found to be infected with tuberculosis, specifically a strain that may be infectious. Anyone who has had intensive contact with the student will be inspected by the GGD Brabant-Zuidoost, which includes 20 co-workers and students of BMT, the University announces.
