Residents of the Netherlands are the best non-native English speakers in the world, according to the EF English Proficiency Index. The residents of Rotterdam score best on their English proficiency, closely followed by Amsterdam and The Hague.

Colleges and universities in the Netherlands are too quick to switch to giving lectures and courses in English, according to researchers from the Dutch academy of sciences KNAW. They put the quality of education under pressure by not paying enough attention to whether lecturers and students have a proper grasp of English before switching, the researchers conclude, AD reports.

Education organization BON thinks that Dutch universities and colleges offer too many courses in English instead of Dutch to attract foreign students, instead of focusing on whether the switch to English will improve the course. The organization is threatening a lawsuit against the universities and colleges if the new government doesn't implement stricter rules for tertiary institutions in their government agreement, AD reports.

The Dutch language is still very popular among its speakers and is not being displaced in any significant way by English, according to a study by the Meertens Institute, Taalunie and Ghent University, Trouw reports.

This year the majority of all Netherlands university programs is taught fully in English, according to a survey by the Volkskrant. Currently 60 percent of the 1,632 courses in 13 universities in the country are taught in English.

Network problems continue to plague Dutch telecom Ziggo, as thousands of people took to social media Monday afternoon to complain about a loss of landline telephone service from the provider. Hospitals were among those most harshly hit by the outage, including the AMC, AVL and Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis medical centers in Amsterdam, and the Alrijne and LUMC hospitals in Leiden.

The first black professional football player in the Netherlands, Steve Mokone, has died at the age of 82, his former club Heracles revealed on Friday. Known as the "Black Meteor," Mokone was signed in1957 by the Almelo-based team after playing for English team, Coventry City.

Two bombs dating back to World War II were found along the A4 motorway near Schiphol Airport, newswire ANP reports. The thousand-pound American bomb and the five-hundred pound British bomb were found a few weeks ago while A9 rerouting work was ongoing, a spokeswoman for Rijkswaterstraat announced.
