The Dutch Health Council wants the government to add the vaccination of 14-year-olds against Meningococcus C and W to the National Vaccination Program. The vaccination of 14 month old toddlers against the bacteria is already part of the national program, but the Health Council thinks that also vaccinating teenagers will add to group immunity, RTL Nieuws reports.
Nearly half of Dutch children between the ages of 4 and 12 years did not get enough exercise last year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands and public health institute RIVM released on Friday. According to the Health Council's movement guidelines, kids in this age group must get "moderately intense" exercise, like walking, cycling or playing outside at least 1 hour per day.
At least dozens of Dutch homes are located too close to underground high-voltage cables, RTL Nieuws reports based on its own research. The Dutch Health Council has indications that children who live close to these cables have a higher risk of leukemia.
The Dutch Health Council wants the government to make HIV prevention pill Prep available to population groups that are at higher risk of being infected by the virus, such as homosexual men. According to the Health Council, the pill is medically- and cost effective and should be considered "essential care" for high risk groups, NOS reports.
The Health Council looked into Prep at the request of former Health Minister Edith Schippers.
For the first time ever, the Health Council of the Netherlands warned against the consequences of sitting still for long periods of time in its new Movement Guidelines. The general gist of the guidelines is: moving is good, moving more is better, the council wrote in the report.
Pregnant woman should get an extra ultrasound around the 13th week of pregnancy to detect abnormalities, the health council advised Dutch parliament on Thursday, NU.nl reports.
Currently the ultrasound is only done at 20 weeks, which gives the woman only four weeks to decide on whether or not to get an abortion if abnormalities are found.
The Dutch Health Council issued a warning about the overuse of disinfectants on Wednesday. According to the Council, disinfectants also kill bacteria that are good for humans and overusing disinfectants could lead to pathogens becoming resistant to them, ANP reports.
The Health Council recognizes that disinfectants are necessary in some cases, such as in disinfecting medical equipment and preventing food spoilage. But in many other cases, using disinfectant is unnecessary.
Cut back on eating meat. Completely stop drinking alcohol, or limit yourself to a maximum of 1 glass per day. Eat at least 15 grams of unsalted nuts a day and have legumes on the table at least once a week.
