Suriname court convicts Dutch driver in passenger bus crash that killed five
A court in Paramaribo sentenced 37-year-old Dutchman Roger L. to two years in prison, one of which is suspended, for crashing into a bus, killing five people and seriously injuring another six, RTL Nieuws reports.
The accident happened in the Surinamese city on January 18. L. was driving without a license and ignored a stop sign at an intersection. He crashed his Jaguar into a passenger bus, with 26 people on board.
The bus rolled multiple times due to the impact. Five passengers died, and six others sustained serious injuries.
Videos of the accident quickly started circulating on social media. The crash caused great indignation in Suriname.
L.’s lawyer argued that the Jaguar’s brakes may not have been functioning well and that it had not been established how fast the Dutchman had been driving.
The court disregarded these arguments and convicted L., sentencing him to two years in prison, half of which is conditionally suspended.
