Young Dutch startup Nerdalize was founded in 2013 with a plan to warm homes using the heat generated from servers, but the innovative company filed for bankruptcy just before the end of the year. The company raised at least 850 thousand euros in a crowdfunding campaign in 2016 after running a pilot program with energy provider Eneco.

The company raised another 750 thousand euros in a second crowdfunding campaign about a year ago, which led to the company winning the Crowdfunding Award last January.

A total of 223 million euros was raised through Dutch crowd initiatives last year, which financed over 5,300 separate actions, according to an analysis from CrowdfundingCijfers.nl

At 10:20 a.m. on Monday the campaign raised 5,085,395 euros from 41,547 supporters. The objective of the campaign is to buy the Hemweg plant from owner Nuon and then close it.

A crowdfunding action started to help Amsterdam student Doeta Aartsma restart her business after her equipment was stolen from her home over Christmas, is gaining support. So far about a third of the 10 thousand euros she needs has been raised.

"I actually feel very rich", Aartsma said to Het Parool. "You could say that I should have lost faith in humanity after this nasty experience, but because so many known and unknown people support me, that is not the case."
