Maarten van der Weijden successfully swam the route of the Elfstedentocht on his second attempt. The 38-year-old man finished in Leeuwarden at 7:30 p.m. on Monday after swimming 195 kilometers, and raising nearly 4 million euros in the process, reports.

With his swim marathon, Van der Weijden raised money for cancer research. Upon his arrival in Leeuwarden, the counter stood at 3,910,763 million euros.

Dutch cancer association KWF granted 49.5 million euros to 88 new cancer research projects, the association announced. According to KWF, the grants were spread to "research over the entire width of the fight against cancer", reports.

The projects receiving grants focus on research in various stages of cancer.

A new large-scale diagnostic center for cancer research is set to be established in Utrecht, Hans Clevers, the outgoing president of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNWA), announced in the program De Kennis van Nu, RTL reports. The project will cost about 25 million euros.
