Russia again blamed the Ukraine for shooting down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014 in a surprise press conference held on Monday. According to the Russians, the BUK missile that shot down the Boeing was indeed produced in Russia, but was in Ukrainian hands at the time of the disaster. The international team investigating the disaster, JIT, said it will "carefully study" Russia's accusations, but also pointed out that in the past the country has been less than generous when it came to responding to requests for assistance, NOS reports.

On Monday Minister Stef Blok of Foreign Affairs will explain the Netherlands and Australia's decision to for its role in the downing of flight MH17 to a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels. He is counting on unanimous support from the European Union on this decision, sources told newspaper AD.

Dutch soldiers picked up a BUK missile in Georgia early this year and brought it back to the Netherlands to use as evidence in the criminal investigation into the MH17 disaster, sources told RTL Nieuws. Employees of military intelligence service MIVD flew to Georgia on February 21st, and returned with the missile a day later. It was delivered to the Gilze-Rijen military airbase.

A group of 18 families, frustrated by the Netherlands’ slow pace at investigating the crash of flight MH17, are calling on Prime Minister Mark Rutte to pressure Russia, Ukraine, and the United States into releasing raw radar images taken on the day of the crash. They are angered that Russia vetoed a proposal last July to try suspects in the MH17 explosion at the International Criminal Court, and that it will still take another six months before the Netherlands decides how to proceed with a prosecution, if any is to take place.

According to the missile maker, flight MH17 was shot down by an older model of missile, which the Ukrainian army has in its possession.

On Tuesday the Dutch Safety Board will be presenting its findings in the investigation into the downing of Malaysian Airlines aircraft MH17 over eastern Ukraine in July last year. The first clear evidence of Malaysian Airlines plane Boeing 777, flight MH17 shot down by a Russian BUK missile can be seen in a forensic investigation commissioned by RTL Nieuws claims. Correspondent Jeroen Akkermans took a number of fragments for investigation from the crash site last November and shipped the fragments for examination at an independent institute.
