Four years after the basic study grant was abolished in favor of a study loan system, research universities and applied sciences universities will now finally see their portion of the money raised by this measure. Dozens of projects from these higher education institutions will be funded with this money in the coming years, something the Dutch government committed to five years ago but had yet to uphold.

Students in the Netherlands more often take out higher loans to fund their studies, Statistics Netherlands reported on Monday. This year the total amount of study debt in the country amounts to 19.3 billion euros, 1.9 billion euros more than last year. This year 1.4 million people have study debt to their name, 388 thousand more than early 2015.

When the basic study grant was abolished, the government promised that the money saved would be invested in education. The government is failing to live up to that promise, according to student organizations ISO and LSVB, RTL Nieuws reports.

According to the organizations, in the year 2000 the government spent nearly 20 thousand euros for each student at university. In 2025 that amount will be only 14,300 euros. There is also a decline for students attending colleges.
