Police shoot armed man on Rotterdam street
The police shot an armed man on Aalsdijk in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde on Monday afternoon. According to the police, he ignored police instructions and tried to flee after officers fired a warning shot.
Police spokespersons told Rijnmond and RTL Nieuws that the man was conscious and coherent when he was transported to the hospital. It is unclear where he was hit or how badly he was hurt. A trauma helicopter was dispatched to the scene.
The incident occurred just before 6:00 p.m. The Rotterdam police said on X that they responded to Aalsdijk after receiving a report about a man with a firearm. “He did not respond to instructions from the officers who arrived on the scene. When officers fired a warning shot, the suspect began to run,” the police said.
“The agents then fired directly at the man. He was injured in the process and was taken to the hospital,” the police said. A Rijnmond correspondent also saw the police use an electric shock weapon on the man.
Officers found a firearm after the incident and seized it for investigation.
The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at government services like the police, will investigate the shooting. This is standard procedure whenever a police officer fires their service weapon.
