Rotterdam train traffic back to normal after week-long outage

The power outage that brought train traffic between Rotterdam and the south of the Netherlands to a standstill for over a week has been resolved. At around 4:45 a.m., NS reported that the restrictions had been lifted. According to ProRail, train services fully resumed around 5:00 a.m.

A fire in a cable duct near Rotterdam Stadion last Monday destroyed approximately 200 cables. Since then, no trains have been able to run between Rotterdam and the south. Repair work was delayed on multiple occasions.

Even on Monday evening, ProRail remained cautious about whether train traffic could restart on Tuesday. It was uncertain whether a technical system in the Willemspooortunnel could be repaired in time.

Repair work and testing continued throughout the night. “These were successful,” ProRail said. “After days and nights of intensive repair work, train traffic has thus resumed.”

On Tuesday, some final finishing work will be carried out on the tracks along the platform at Rotterdam Stadion. According to ProRail, this will not affect the timetable.
