Rotterdam-Zuid line closed until Saturday; No trains between Groningen and Zuidhorn

Travelers on the rail route between Groningen and Leeuwarden must still rely on replacement buses for a large part of Wednesday. This follows lightning damage to the track in Noord-Nederland during this weekend's thunderstorms. No full restoration date has been confirmed.

Additionally, service between Rotterdam and the southern part of the Netherlands has been halted until Saturday. This follows a fire in a cable gutter next to the tracks in Rotterdam-Zuid, according to ProRail.

The disruption in the north began over the weekend when lightning struck the rail section between Hoogkerk and Zuidhorn during severe weather. Since then, trains have not been running between Groningen and Zuidhorn. Passengers have been required to use replacement buses for travel along that segment.

ProRail, the Dutch rail infrastructure manager, said repair work is underway. The agency said a contractor is working intensively to restore the damaged track.

However, ProRail added that additional defects have been discovered during the repair work. Because of this, more components must be replaced than originally expected. This has slowed the restoration process.

Earlier, ProRail said it expected train service to resume by Tuesday afternoon, but that timeline is no longer certain due to the newly identified issues.
