Cyclist, 32, dies in hit-and-run near Biddinghuizen; Suspect arrested

A 32-year-old cyclist died after being struck late Saturday night on the Biddingringweg near Biddinghuizen, Omroep Flevoland reports. A 49-year-old man from Biddinghuizen later turned himself in and was arrested in connection with the case, police said.

On Saturday at about 11:30 p.m., police received an initial report of a cyclist riding against traffic without lights on the Biddingringweg. Before officers arrived, a separate report came in about a traffic collision at the same location.

Emergency responders found the cyclist seriously injured at the scene. Attempts were made to resuscitate him, but he died from his injuries.

Police said the vehicle involved was likely a Renault van. The driver left the scene after the collision without assisting the victim. The van is believed to have sustained damage on its right side. Authorities issued a Burgernet alert asking the public to look out for the vehicle.

On Sunday at around 12:00 p.m., a 49-year-old resident of Biddinghuizen presented himself at a police station. He is suspected of being the driver of the van involved in the fatal crash. Police detained him and seized the vehicle for further investigation.
