KNMI ends code orange overnight, warns of storms and 27–32°C heat Sunday and Monday

The Dutch meteorological institute KNMI lifted code orange shortly after 2 a.m. overnight but continued to issue widespread code yellow warnings for severe thunderstorms and high temperatures across large parts of the Netherlands for Sunday and Monday.

Daytime highs Sunday and Monday are expected to range between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius, with the highest temperatures concentrated in the southern provinces. In major cities across the central and southern Netherlands, nighttime lows are expected to remain above 20 degrees, offering little relief from the heat.

Code yellow for thunderstorms remains in effect in Zeeland, Zuid-Holland, Limburg, Noord-Brabant, Gelderland, and Overijssel. The institute warns that storms may still bring hail, brief but intense rainfall, and strong wind gusts capable of causing localized disruption and damage. “Hail, heavy rain in a short period and (strong) wind gusts can locally cause nuisance/damage,” KNMI said.

A separate code yellow warning for heat applies to nearly the entire country, excluding Friesland, Groningen, and the Wadden Islands. In those northern areas, conditions are less extreme, but much of the rest of the Netherlands continues to face high temperatures.

KNMI also noted that humidity will intensify the discomfort, with the perceived heat stress reaching a level between 7 and 9 on the heat index scale.
