NS launches €49 per month ticket for unlimted off-peak travel this summer
Today, NS launches its €49 per month NS Flex Dal Vrij train subscription, a government-subsidized, cheap ticket to help consumers with the high fuel prices caused by the Iran war. “Anyone who purchases a subscription by June 30th can travel by train unlimitedly outside of peak hours for two months,” the Dutch rail company said.
With this ticket, the government and NS, in collaboration with other train operators, aim to keep train travel affordable to everyone this summer. “For €49 per month, you can travel endlessly through the Netherlands during off-peak hours. From Groningen to Middelburg and from Maastricht to The Hague, the Netherlands lies at your feet,” NS said. Without the government subsidy, such a subscription would cost €127.95 per month.
Children up to and including age 11 travel for free with a Kids Free subscription. Parking at most P&R garages at the stations will cost €2 per day until August 31. “At this price, traveling by train is many times cheaper than traveling by car, especially considering the increased fuel costs and often additional parking fees.”
To launch the ticket, State Secretary Annet Bertram of Infrastructure and Water Management will present the very first copies to four participants in The Longest Train Race at the Railway Museum on Monday morning. NS organized this race, which will happen on June 21st, “to inspire the Netherlands with how beautiful our country is and how much you can see in a single day.”
The teams will start at Utrecht Central Station on Sunday morning and travel throughout the country, visiting different provinces and completing tasks on the train and at the various destinations.
