Temperatures to top 30 degrees in Netherlands from Thursday as heat wave builds

Cool weather in the Netherlands is set to give way to summer heat later this week, with temperatures expected to top 30 degrees in some areas and thunderstorms likely from Friday afternoon into the weekend, Weeronline reported.

Temperatures will rise gradually each day, according to what Weerplaza meteorologist Johnny Willemsen told NU.nl. Monday will start cloudy with isolated light showers before turning dry and brighter in the afternoon, with highs of 16 to 21 degrees. Overnight, patchy drizzle is possible, mainly in the northern half of the country.

Regional differences will persist on Tuesday and Wednesday. A southwesterly wind will keep coastal areas around 20 degrees, while temperatures inland continue to climb. “It could already reach 27 degrees in Limburg,” Willemsen said. Weeronline forecasts highs of 21 to 24 degrees on Tuesday, with southeastern parts of the country locally reaching 25 degrees.

On Wednesday, temperatures are expected to range from around 20 degrees in the northwest to 26 degrees in Brabant and Limburg, with mostly dry weather and only a small chance of showers in the north.

“From Thursday it will really be warm everywhere,” Willemsen said. Temperatures across the country are forecast to reach 25 to 30 degrees, with some places possibly exceeding 30 degrees. The Wadden Islands and areas directly along the coast may remain slightly cooler.

Friday is expected to be hot nationwide, with temperatures between 28 and 31 degrees in many places. Sunshine will likely dominate, but the chance of thunderstorms and locally heavy rain will increase during the afternoon. “It is still too early to say where those showers will fall,” Willemsen told NU.nl, adding that the risk of thunderstorms from Friday afternoon is relatively high.

Summer temperatures are expected to continue into the weekend. Saturday will likely remain warm, with additional rain and thunderstorms possible.

Willemsen warned that UV levels will be high as June 21, the longest day of the year, approaches.

“At the end of June, the sun is strongest in the Netherlands because it is highest in the sky,” Willemsen told the newspaper. “You can get sunburned within 15 minutes all week, even when it is 20 degrees.”
