More road closures & traffic jams in Amsterdam this week; No trains to Zuid station
Amsterdam residents can expect more traffic chaos this week as work on the Zuidasdok project enters its next phase. Between now and Tuesday morning, May 5, the A4 and the A10 South will be closed at various times, causing extra travel time of up to an hour. There will also be no trains to and from Amsterdam Zuid station for this period, though the metro will continue to run.
“We expect extreme congestion, particularly on the highways,” environmental manager Werner Falke told AT5. “Extra travel time could amount to up to an hour.”
During the closures, traffic will be redirected via the A9, A2, and A5. Road users can also expect extra traffic on these routes.
The closures are necessary for the Zuidasdok project, a major infrastructure project intended to improve accessibility in Amsterdam and the northern part of the Randstad. As part of this project, the De Nieuwe Meer interchange is being completely renovated to allow the Zuid ring road to be widened from four to six lanes. During the closures this week, sheet piling and foundation piles will be installed.
Amsterdam Zuid station is also being renovated as part of the Zuidasdok project. Due to this work, no trains will run to and from Amsterdam Zuid station from today, Tuesday, April 28, to Monday, May 4. The metro will run as usual.
After this closure, there will be a brief reprieve. The next closures are between May 12 and May 18. Then, several lanes on the A10 Zuid will be closed, as well as the entire A4 toward Amsterdam.
The municipality of Amsterdam advised road users to travel outside peak hours and work from home as much as possible. Also, use navigation apps to check the traffic situation before leaving the house.
