DHL worker finds €50,000 stuffed in teddy bear at Maastricht airport facility
Police in the Westelijke Mijnstreek region intercepted 50,000 euros hidden inside a teddy bear at a DHL postal sorting center in Beek, near Maastricht Aachen Airport, authorities reported.
Officers were dispatched to the facility after a worker flagged a suspicious package. At the scene, the police initially found what appeared to be an ordinary soft toy. They described conducting what they called a “brief inspection” of the teddy bear, during which they noticed that it felt unusual in certain areas.
Investigators reported irregular stitching at the head and back of the toy, suggesting it had been opened and resewn. That prompted a closer examination.
Police then carefully opened the teddy bear and discovered multiple folded 50-euro banknotes concealed within its stuffing. The total amount recovered was 50,000 euros, authorities confirmed.
The money was immediately seized and has been transferred to the forensic investigations unit for analysis. The police are now investigating who sent the package and who was intended to receive it.
