Dutch discount chain Action announces plans to enter United States market

After its expansion in Europe, the Dutch discount chain Action has set its sights on the United States, the company announced with its 2025 figures on Thursday. If all goes according to plan, the first Action store in the United States will open by early 2028.

The Zwaagdijk-based company aims to open its first store in the southeastern United States by the end of 2027 or early 2028. By the end of 2030, Action wants 100 American branches. The chain aims to achieve this using “the same disciplined and step-by-step approach” that Action is employing with its expansion in Europe.

Action started in 1993 with its first location in Enkhuizen. The chain has since grown to 3,302 stores in Europe. Its first two stores in Croatia opened this month, and after the summer, the chain will launch in Slovenia. Next year, Action plans to enter Bulgaria as its 17th country.

The company opened 384 branches last year and plans to add another 400 this year. To support this expansion, Action opened three new distribution centers in Italy, Spain, and France.

Action announced that net sales rose by 16 percent to €16 billion in 2025. It attributed the increase to customer growth. Action stores now serve an average of 21.6 million customers per week.
