Telstar shock PSV 3–1 in major Eredivisie upset
PSV Eindhoven suffered their second defeat of the season at the hands of relegation battlers Telstar on Sunday. The Eindhovenaren could have clinched the Eredivisie title if Ajax had beaten Feyenoord and they beat Telstar in the BUKO Stadium, but after Feyenoord drew 1-1 with Ajax, what many supporters were expecting to be a historic day turned into a nightmare with the club from IJmuiden coming out 3-1 winners.
It was PSV’s second league defeat in a row after they were also beaten by NEC Nijmegen last weekend at home. They will still be able to secure their 27th league title if they manage to win their first game after the international break against Utrecht and Feyenoord fail to beat FC Volendam away.
PSV’s task was made harder in the 39th minute when full-back Anass Salah Eddine was sent off for an elbow on Gerald Alders. This was then followed up with Telstar’s first goal of the game in injury time of the first half through Patrick Brouwer when the midfielder tapped home from close range.
Peter Bosz’s side equalized shortly after halftime through Killian Sildillia before Sem van Duijn put Telstar ahead again in the 66th minute. The final goal of the game was scored by Kay Tejan in the 74th minute. A long throw fell to the 29-year-old, who had only just come on, and he volleyed it into the corner.
It was a significant win for Telstar, who have now climbed up to 14th place. They are level on points with FC Volendam and Excelsior, who are in the relegation playoff spot. Excelsior gained a point this weekend with a draw away against bottom-of-the-league Heracles, while Volendam made it three losses in a row with a 2-0 loss away to Sparta Rotterdam.
Out of the top eight, only FC Twente and FC Utrecht were victorious on the match day. Twente defeated Fortuna Sittard away, and FC Utrecht’s impressive run of form continued with a 2-0 win over Go Ahead Eagles.
AZ were defeated convincingly by FC Groningen, who seem to have re-found some form after a poor run, while Heerenveen and NEC played out an entertaining 2-0 draw.
