Flu epidemic likely past its peak, Dutch Public Health Institute reports

The flu epidemic appears to have passed its peak after four weeks. Fewer patients are consulting their GP for flu-like symptoms, and lab tests are showing the virus less often, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and the research institute Nivel.

Last week, 66 per 100,000 people consulted their GP for flu-like complaints, down from 71 the previous week and 68 the week before. While the majority of flu patients recover at home, a smaller portion, primarily more vulnerable individuals, still visit a doctor.

When assessing an epidemic, scientists consider both GP consultation rates and laboratory findings. Because flu-like complaints may stem from viruses other than influenza, samples are tested to confirm their presence. In the most recent week, the flu virus was identified in slightly over 40 percent of samples, down from more than half the week before.

The RIVM says the influenza virus continues to circulate widely, but notes signs of stabilization or a downward trend in recent weeks, indicating that the epidemic may have peaked or is already on the decline.

Influenza is caused by the influenza virus and can lead to symptoms such as coughing, fever, fatigue, headaches, sore throat, and muscle pain. While most patients recover without medical treatment, certain groups face greater risks, including people over 60, individuals with respiratory conditions, and those with diabetes. The RIVM estimates that approximately 4,700 deaths occur annually due to the consequences of influenza.
