Nationwide code yellow issued as snow and ice create hazardous conditions

A nationwide code yellow warning for snow and icy roads will take effect Sunday afternoon across the Netherlands, with forecasters warning of hazardous travel conditions and up to 5 centimeters of snowfall that could disrupt traffic into the night.

The KNMI issued the alert for the entire country because of expected snowfall and slippery roads. The warning will first take effect in the southwest and will spread across the Netherlands later in the day, with start times and durations varying by region.

In Zeeland, code yellow will be in effect from 4 p.m. to midnight. Zuid-Holland and Noord-Brabant will be under the warning from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. Monday. The same time window will apply to Limburg.

In Noord-Holland, Utrecht, Flevoland and Gelderland, the warning will run from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. In Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel and on the Waddeneilanden, code yellow will apply from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Groningen will be placed under the alert from 9 p.m. until 9 a.m. Monday.

According to Weeronline, temperatures are expected to fall to the freezing point during the afternoon, allowing snow to settle more easily. Snowfall Sunday evening is forecast across much of the country, with 3 to 5 centimeters possible in several areas.

“People who want to enjoy the snow should be quick,” Weeronline said, adding that later in the evening the snow in the southwest will turn into wet snow and rain.
