Volendam stun PSV with late winner to hand leaders second defeat of the season
PSV suffered their second defeat of the season in the Eredivisie on Friday. The league leaders lost 2-1 away to struggling FC Volendam. Earlier in the season, Telstar had already defeated Peter Bosz’s squad, yet the coach’s team remains well ahead at the top of the table despite the unexpected setback against the 15th-placed club.
Volendam took the lead midway through the second half with a beautiful goal from Robin van Cruijsen. PSV appeared to regain control after Dennis Man leveled the score, but Aurelio Oehlers broke through and, in the 87th minute, finished past goalkeeper Niek Schiks to secure the win.
PSV approached the game with self-assurance. The reigning champions aimed to stretch their consecutive away victories to 17, leaning on the fact that they had triumphed 19 times previously against the team from the fishing village.
In the first half, PSV controlled the game and held the majority of possession, yet they couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities they were given. Ivan Perisic, Guus Til, Armando Obispo, and Mauro Júnior all failed to beat Volendam’s goalkeeper Kayne van Oevelen.
Volendam did pose some threats toward Schiks’ goal, but the PSV keeper remained calm, handling attempts such as Benjamin Pauwels’ shot with composure.
After the break, the momentum shifted. PSV almost paid the price twice within minutes. Schiks barely denied a powerful effort from Ozan Kökcü and then saw Bradley Kuwas shoot narrowly over the crossbar after breaking through. The deadlock was finally broken in the 67th minute, when Van Cruijsen latched onto a deflected ball and blasted it beyond the stranded keeper.
Not long after, Man appeared to rescue PSV with a well-placed finish at the near post. However, Volendam kept pressing forward without hesitation. In the 87th minute, Oehlers surged through and found the net to seal the victory. The hard-earned three points allowed Volendam to widen the gap to the relegation zone.
