Snowstorm causes record 712 train disruptions across the Netherlands in January
Heavy snowfall during the first week of the last month led to a record number of train disruptions in the Netherlands in January, according to data analyzed by ANP from Rijdendetreinen.nl.
A total of 712 disruptions were recorded, 56 more than in January 2025. The figures reflect delayed and out-of-service trains, not canceled trips, and mark the highest monthly total since measurements began in 2011.
The breakdown included 204 switch failures and 203 defective trains. Weather-related issues hit a record high, with 68 incidents, surpassing the previous peak of 25 disruptions in November 2013.
The longest weather-related disruption occurred on January 3 on the Eindhoven–Heerlen route, lasting 4,102 minutes, or just over 68 hours. That day saw heavy snowfall, and code orange was issued across much of the country.
The hardest hit were major railway hubs. Rotterdam Centraal, Schiphol Airport, and Leiden Centraal reported the most significant operational problems during the month.
