Overnight snowfall covers large parts of Netherlands, with up to 7 cm in Limburg Hills

Large parts of the Netherlands were covered in fresh snow overnight after widespread snowfall brought several centimeters. A code orange weather warning is to remain in effect for parts of Noord-Nederland until 9 a.m. Saturday.

Snow fell on a broad scale overnight into Saturday, January 10, according to Weeronline. Many areas recorded a fresh layer of several centimeters. In the Limburg Hills, snowfall reached 3 to 7 centimeters overnight and is expected to continue into the afternoon.

During the morning hours, snow continued at times in the southern half of the country before gradually tapering off. In the northern half, conditions are expected to turn mostly dry, with some sunshine developing.

In Amsterdam, snow began falling Friday afternoon, when about 3 centimeters accumulated. Another 3 to 4 centimeters fell during the evening and overnight hours. The initial snowfall partially melted before temperatures dropped below freezing, creating a frozen snow layer beneath the fresh accumulation. Meteorologists warned that an exceptionally cold night lies ahead.

Elsewhere in the country, roads remained locally slippery due to snow and frozen wet patches, prompting a nationwide code yellow warning. Meteorologists said an exceptionally cold night was expected to follow. Lighter snowfall continued in some areas, with local accumulations of 1 to 2 centimeters, but conditions are expected to turn dry later in the morning.
