Video: More accidents in north & northeast Netherlands as icy conditions persist
The freezing weather continues in the north and northeastern parts of the Netherlands, and icy roads again caused multiple accidents overnight. The KMMI has a code yellow warning for slippery conditions in place for Groningen, Drenthe, Friesland, and the Wadden Islands.
The A7 highway near Groningen was temporarily closed last night due to multiple accidents, the public works and infrastructure department Rijkswaterstaat reported. The closure was between the Zuidbroek and Westbroek interchanges.
A police spokesperson told RTL Nieuws that slippery road conditions caused the accidents. “The roads are apparently very slippery,” the spokesperson said. “We are receiving several reports of cars hitting crash barriers. No one was seriously hurt in the accidents, he said.
There was also an accident on the N33 near Gieten. The driver of the car was taken to the hospital, a journalist at the scene told NOS.
According to the meteorological institute KNMI, local precipitation in the north and northeast led to localized slippery conditions due to rain on frozen ground or black ice. “These slippery conditions can be treacherous because black ice is difficult to see,” the KNMI warned. “There is a risk of accidents due to slippery roads, cycle paths, sidewalks, and bridges.” The KNMI expects to lift the icy roads warning by around 3:00 p.m. on Monday.
On Monday morning, Rijkswaterstaat also reported traffic jams caused by accidents on the A12 toward The Hague, near the Nootdorp offramp, and on the A8 toward Amsterdam, near the Zaanstad-Zuid offramp. These were likely not caused by icy roads.
By 7:53 a.m., the road users’ association ANWB recorded 143 traffic jams covering 712 kilometers of Dutch roads.
