Snow hits Groningen and Drenthe; Ice warnings extend to Noord-Holland, Flevoland

Groningen and parts of Drenthe experienced snowfall today. Tonight and tomorrow, a Code Yellow warning for icy roads is in place for Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe because of snow and possible ice formation. Yellow alerts have also been issued for Noord-Holland, Flevoland, and Overijssel due to slippery conditions, including frozen road sections.

“One to two centimeters of fresh snowfall is expected in many places in the provinces of Overijssel, Gelderland, and Flevoland tonight and tomorrow morning. Further northeast, snow will also continue to fall intermittently,” the KNMI wrote on Wednesday.

This will likely cause icy conditions on roads, sidewalks, and cycling paths, especially off the main roads. The slippery conditions in some parts of Flevoland, Gelderland, and Overijssel will likely disappear by Thursday afternoon, but “the localized slippery conditions in the northeast will continue until Friday morning.”

The yellow alerts are valid from around 8 p.m. tonight through the night and into the morning, with continued snowfall and wet roads at risk of freezing in cold temperatures.

A band of precipitation will move into the Netherlands from the south tonight, but in the northeast, it will stay in cold air, leading to snow in that region. Accumulations of 2–8 cm, and locally more, are expected, particularly in the northern provinces.

Later tonight and overnight, the snow will move east and northeast, resulting in continued wintry precipitation tomorrow morning.
