PSV stalled by NAC as Feyenoord and Ajax win two in a row
PSV Eindhoven failed to beat NAC Breda at home on Saturday. The 2-2 draw follows a disappointing evening on Tuesday when they were comfortably beaten by Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League. A stoppage-time equalizer from Armando Obispo saved the home side’s blushes after NAC had taken the lead through Boy Kemper and Charles-Andres Brym.
Despite the disappointing evening, PSV is still 14 points clear at the top of the Eredivisie table. The concern for manager Peter Bosz will be for the midweek game in the Champions League. PSV will likely need to beat Bayern Munich to book a spot in the playoffs. Bayern are already guaranteed a spot in the top eight of the competition, and so are likely going to use the opportunity to rotate the side.
The draw puts NAC a step closer to Telstar, who are now just one point ahead of them in the relegation play-off spot. Telstar were beaten 1-0 at home by AZ Alkmaar on Sunday, due to a goal from Isak Jensen.
Second-place Feyenoord followed their convincing win over Sturm Graz on Thursday with a 4-2 win over Heracles Almelo. A goal from Leo Sauer had given the Rotterdammers the lead before a penalty scored by Luka Kulenovic leveled the game in the 29th minute.
Jordan Bos restored the home side’s lead in the first half before two goals in the final minutes by Anis Hadj-Moussa and Casper Tengstedt completed a second win in a week for Robin van Persie. Tristan van Gilst scored a late consolation.
Besides PSV, the rest of the six won their games this weekend. Ajax beat FC Volendam with ease in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Two goals from center back Youri Baas helped them to a 2-0 win. NEC beat PEC Zwolle 2-1.
Sparta Rotterdam won their fourth game in a row against FC Utrecht. It is their longest winning run in the league since December 1993- January 1994. Utrecht, who know that manager Ron Jans is departing at the end of the season, continued their dismal form, winning just one out of their last 12 games.
