Riot police intervene in Amsterdam, The Hague after Morocco loses Africa Cup of Nations
Riot police had to intervene in Amsterdam and The Hague on Sunday night due to unrest following Morocco’s loss in the Africa Cup of Nations final. Morocco lost 1-0 to Senegal in a tumultuous match.
Shortly after the final whistle, approximately 200 people gathered at the corner of Vaillantlaan and Hoefkade in The Hague’s Schilderswijk neighborhood, NOS reported. They threw fireworks at police and bystanders, and the riot police intervened. Eight people were arrested. The neighborhood was quiet again by around 1:00 a.m.
There was also unrest on Plein ‘40-’45 in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Football supporters threw fireworks and other objects at riot police officers. According to AT5, the riot police cleared the square shortly after 1:00 a.m., arresting several people.
According to NOS, Schilderswijk in The Hague was also restless on Wednesday, when Morocco won the semi-final against Nigeria. The festive mood turned hostile as the evening progressed, and supporters also threw fireworks at the riot police. One person was arrested.
