Two dogs killed in Oss car accident; Owner dies after returning home

Two dogs were killed Sunday evening in Oss when they were struck by a car while being walked, and their 55-year-old owner later died of natural causes after returning home, police said. “It is a sad series of circumstances,” the police spokesperson said.

The accident occurred in the Ussen neighborhood around 8 p.m. A 33-year-old man from Oss was driving when the dogs, leashed and crossing the road at a non-zebra crossing, were hit. A regional animal ambulance reported to de Gelderlander that bystanders, colleagues, and a veterinarian attempted to save the animals, but one dog died in the ambulance and the other later at a veterinary clinic.

Police said the owner walked home after the accident, visibly emotional. Shortly after arriving at his house on Distelweg, he became unwell. Officers and emergency responders, including a trauma helicopter, rushed to the scene, but he could not be revived. A police spokesperson described the death as “a natural death” and not directly related to the collision.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene with bystanders and later reported the incident to authorities. Police confirmed the 33-year-old man is not considered a suspect.

Emergency responders were initially called to the home for a medical emergency. Only afterward did they learn of the accident involving the dogs.
