Adam and Olivia are Amsterdam’s most popular baby names in 2025
Adam and Olivia continue to dominate as the most popular baby names in Amsterdam in 2025, the municipality reported.
Among girls, it remained the most chosen name, with 37 newborns, followed by Sofia (35), Maya (32), Sara (30), Sophia (29), Aya (28), Nina (27), Mia (27), Noor (26), and Mila (26).
Sofia and Sophia are variants of the ancient Greek word “sophia,” meaning wisdom. Similarly, Noor—also spelled Nur, Nour, or Nor—means “light” in Arabic, with Nora as a related variant. In total, parents chose Noor, Nora, or Nour 59 times in 2025.
For boys, Adam held the top spot for the second consecutive year, with 66 newborns receiving the name. The Hebrew meaning of Adam is “son of the red earth,” and in Arabic it similarly translates to “made from the earth,” symbolizing the first human and first prophet.
Oliver followed with 43 babies, Mohammed with 39, James with 38, and Noah with 37. Other popular boys’ names included Louis (35), Liam (30), Willem (30), Sam (27), and Olivier (26).
When counting all spelling variants, Mohammed—such as Muhammed, Mohamed, Muhammad, and Mohammad—tops the list, while combining Oliver and Olivier results in 69 newborns with a version of the name. Oliver is derived from the Latin Olivier, meaning “olive tree.”
Naming trends varied across Amsterdam’s neighborhoods. In Centrum, Felix was the top boys’ name, while Maya and Olivia were the most popular for girls. Nieuw-West saw Adam, Mohammed, Ibrahim, and Moussa leading for boys, with Aya, Sara, Maryam, and Sofia favored for girls.
Most boys in Noord were named Adam, Noah, or Liam. Most girls were named Aya, Cato, or Julia. Oost’s boys were most often named Adam, James, or Louis, with Cato, Mia, Mila, and Nina topping the girls’ list.
Weesp favored Oliver for boys, followed by George, Julius, and Sam, while Julie led for girls, followed by Ella, Juliëtte, Lina, Mia, Nina, and Sofia. West’s top boys’ names were Adam, Mohammed, and Oliver, and Olivia and Maya led for girls.
In Zuid, boys were often named Louis, Oliver, or James, with girls named Lily, Olivia, or Sophia. Zuidoost’s most popular boys’ names were Mohammed, Muhammad, and Noah, while Aaliyah, Amaya, and Yara led for girls.
The Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB), the Dutch national social security agency, will release its official nationwide baby name figures on January 8.
