Early New Year’s Eve insurance claims suggest damage may be below 2024's €15.5 million
Insurers are beginning to receive claims following New Year’s Eve, covering fire damage to vehicles, houses, sheds, and fences. Insurance company Nationale Nederlanden (NN) reports that the damage reported so far seems less serious than last year, but cautions that the picture may change as additional claims come in.
Several dozen NN customers with property or contents insurance have reported damage. “This includes burned sheds and fences,” a spokesperson said. Around 20 claims were filed for car damage. “Some involve completely burned cars, but most are due to slippery roads or collisions on New Year’s Eve,” said the NN spokesperson
NN manages these policies under the Nationale-Nederlanden brand as well as ING Verzekeringen, OHRA, ASN Verzekeringen, and ABN AMRO Verzekeringen.
ASR reports that its emergency center has received several dozen claims, including roof fires, broken windows, a house fire, and a café blaze. An ASR spokesperson said, “Our emergency center shows that the situation appears manageable so far. However, it is too early to give a full overview.” Claims from customers insured through advisers or intermediaries usually arrive later.
Later this month, the Dutch Association of Insurers, the umbrella organization for insurers, will provide an estimate of the total insured losses from New Year’s Eve.
The association previously suggested that a nationwide fireworks ban, expected to be in place for next year’s celebrations, could reduce damages by at least 5 million euros. Insured losses during New Year’s Eve 2024–2025 amounted to 15.5 million euros.
