Three explosions, fires at Hoogvliet primary school in one week

School administrators, parents and children at the Zalmplaatschool on Aalreep in Rotterdam-Hoogvliet are increasingly concerned after the primary school was targeted by arson attempts and an explosion three times in one week, prompting an investigation by emergency services.

According to Rijnmond, the school said the latest explosion occurred just before midnight Sunday in the classroom of group 3C. “The front of the building was damaged, but classes can continue,” the administration wrote in a message to parents.

Students may still notice a smell of smoke, according to the school, but firefighters determined it is not dangerous. “The inconvenience is therefore limited. It’s extremely unfortunate that this has happened,” the school wrote.

The administration told Rijnmond that “in total, there have now been three attempts at arson/explosion.” Two incidents were already reported in the middle of the night last week at the same school.

Neither the police nor the school has identified a suspect. The administration says it has “no concrete suspicion."
