Dutch island Schiermonnikoog again first to report vote count; D66, CDA show gains
The municipality of Schiermonnikoog, located on the island of the same name, was the first to report its complete provisional vote count in the 2025 Dutch General Election. While the left-wing faction of GroenLinks-PvdA remained the top vote earner on the island, support for the left-wing faction fell, while support for D66 and CDA both grew significantly.
This year, the municipality counted its ballots and submitted the total by 9:45 p.m. News service ANP said the results were filed nine minutes faster than in 2023.
The largest party on the island, just like last time, was GroenLinks-PvdA with 21.6 percent, closely followed by D66 with 20.5 percent. GroenLinks-PvdA saw support falter by 4 percentage points, while D66 made gains of over 13 percentage points.
The voter turnout on Schiermonnikoog was 131 percent. Two years ago, it was 117 percent. Voter turnout is often higher than 100 percent on the Wadden Sea island, where tourists, guests, and workers wind up casting their ballots alongside residents.
After Schiermonnikoog, the island of Vlieland was the second municipality to achieve a positive result. Here too, D66 made significant gains, rising from 8.3 percent to 21 percent, thus overtaking GroenLinks-PvdA as the largest party. The left-wing faction lost 7 percentage points, dropping to 17.4 percent.
As on Schiermonnikoog, turnout exceeded 100 percent. At 112 percent, turnout was almost 11 percentage points higher than in 2023.
