Participant dies during Veldslag om Norg mountain bike race
A participant in the Veldslag om Norg mountain bike event died Saturday after becoming unwell during the race, organizers said. The ride, which drew more than 2,200 cyclists, was stopped early following the incident, according to RTV Drenthe.
“Unfortunately, this day took a very sad turn. During the ride, a participant became unwell and passed away,” the Veldslag om Norg organizers said in a statement.
The finish line of the Veldslag coincided with the first edition of the Van Brink tot Brink running event, which involved over 500 runners. That race, starting in Roden and ending in Norg, was also ended earlier.
The organizers added that both events were halted immediately and extended their condolences to the family and everyone affected. “We wish them strength and courage during this great loss,” they said.
Authorities confirmed the incident occurred on-site, and no further details about the cause of death were immediately released.
