Dutch Grand Prix even better than previous editions, mayor says

Zandvoort’s mayor, David Moolenburgh, looks back with satisfaction on the Grand Prix festivities in his village. “I can only say that it was a better edition than in previous years. Transport to and from the circuit, for example, was already running smoothly, but this time, it went even more smoothly,” Moolenburgh said on Sunday as spectators departed.

According to the mayor, the festivities surrounding the race event went well “apart from a few incidents.” For example, there was some unrest in Zandvoort’s busy nightlife area on Saturday evening. “The decision was made at the time to close the gates. Some people disagreed with that. One gentleman went berserk with the police; others got involved. That’s what happens when you put so many people together,” Moolenburgh said.

NS reported bringing nearly 140,000 Formula 1 fans to Zandvoort over the weekend. According to the rail company, this is more than in the previous four Grand Prix editions and therefore a record.

NS said the weekend went well. It ran a special timetable throughout the weekend, with a train every five minutes at maximum length between Amsterdam and Zandvoort. This allowed 10,000 per hour to be transported to Zandvoort and back. Sunday, the day of the races, saw the most fans taking the train.
