Rotterdam-Zuid’s busiest metro station to get new hall, largest local bike hub
Rotterdam’s busiest metro station on the south side, Zuidplein, is set for a major transformation after the city council approved funding for the project, Rijnmond reports. The municipality has reserved around 13 million euros to give the station hall a makeover.
Preparatory work around the station is reportedly already underway. The full renovation is expected to begin this fall. The new hall, located at street level under the current station, will feature glass walls, increased space, and improved comfort.
Zuidplein will also receive Rotterdam-Zuid’s "largest" bike hub, reportedly providing space for 973 bicycles, cargo bikes, and scooters.
“The first version of the metro station dates back to 1968. The metro line from Centraal Station to Zuidplein was the first in the Netherlands,” reports OPEN Rotterdam.
The new hall will accommodate shops and food outlets, retaining businesses such as Café Meeting Point and Bram Ladage, while adding seven new commercial units. According to project planners, the hall is designed “to create a spacious feeling.”
