Man, 22, arrested for sex crime near where Abcoude girl was found killed

The police arrested a 22-year-old man on Thursday evening for committing a serious sex crime on Weesperzijde in Amsterdam last week Friday. He allegedly attacked a woman just a few kilometers from where 17-year-old Lisa from Abcoude was found brutally killed on Wednesday morning. The police told the media on Thursday that they were handling the investigations separately, but looking for a connection.

The man is suspected of attacking a woman at around 00:30 a.m. on Friday, August 15. She was walking along the waterfront on Weesperzijde when a man grabbed her, beat her up, and sexually assaulted her. The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The police launched a large-scale investigation and successfully tracked the suspect down using security camera footage from the area. A police arrest team detained the 22-year-old suspect at a location of the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum seekers (COA) in Amsterdam on Thursday. The man has no registered address, and the police did not disclose his nationality.

At 4:15 a.m. on Wednesday, 17-year-old Lisa from Abcoude was found violently killed on Holterbergweg in Duivendrecht, less than 5 kilometers from the scene of the sex crime on Weesperzijde in Amsterdam. The girl was cycling home from Amsterdam after a night out with friends when she was attacked. She called the police shortly before the attack, reporting that a man on a bike was following her.

A police spokesperson told RTL Nieuws that the two cases were being investigated separately. “But we are investigating whether there is a connection.” The 22-year-old man is currently only a suspect in the Weeseprzijkde sexual assault, and not a suspect in Lisa’s killing.
